After much research and trying not to spend a lot of money, I decided to buy a different backpack. The ULA backpack was $250. It seemed very expensive for my first backpack. So I have been checking out review sites, youtube videos and decided on buying a Kelty backpack.
Here are some of the features.
It is an external frame so it is a little heavier than internal frame backpacks. It has a main compartment and 4 outside smaller pockets. It has a place for a bladder. It has many adjustments for all different size people. I can also hang the tent and sleeping bag on the outside of the pack to save room. It can hold 3950 cubic inches or 65 liters.
The list price of this backpack is $139. And I have seen it as low as $105. This morning, December 25, I get on Kelty website and they have it as a web special for $83.95 and free shipping. With tax it is right at $90. Man, you can't beat that!
Here is a picture of the backpack

Wow this really looks good and it looks like it will work very good. Can't wait to see it. Laurie and Breanna got me the Jet Boil cooking kit. It is really nice and everything fits in the cup including the fuel container. It is suppose to be 50 degrees on Friday makes me want to go on a trail.
ReplyDeleteJetboil huh? What color is it? And was it just the base unit or did you get some of the options?
ReplyDeleteIt has a black cover and a blue cover. I didn't get anything extra except a stand to keep it level. You screw it on the fuel container and turn a knob and push a button and it starts the flame. The cup attaches to the burner. It does not have a wind blocker. It heats up very fast. I have not tried to boil water yet and when I do I will let you know how it works or I guess we might find out when we go to the cooking class. I am also going to be able to look for a tent with the money I got from the pool table. This whole thing we are doing is real exciting. I am not sure why but I am looking forward to taking on a new challenge and the adventure of being with nature.
ReplyDeleteHey, you should be getting your pack soon. Let me know when you get it and what you think. Do you think we need a rain cover for our packs.
ReplyDeleteThe pack left Bloomington CA yesterday at 10.30a and the tracking says it will get here on the 30th. How does that happen? You all have a direct truck from California to Indianapolis? If I get it Thursday, I will be impressed.
ReplyDeleteI think we will need rain covers but they are so expensive. Some hikers just make sure everything in the pack is in waterproof sacks so they wont have to worry about the rain. I wonder if we could make them out of Tyvek. Do you know anyone who might have some Tyvek? Not only could we use it for covers, but we could use it for under our tents. A guy on ebay sells it per foot and I will probably buy some from him if we can't find some from someone around here.
I am not sure what tyvek is. It sounds like something you wrap around the house prior to putting up your siding. I am not sure it usually takes 4 days from California. I saw a rain cover on Ebay that sold for $10 but other are real expensive. The tyvek sounds better but I do think we need some kind of cover for the packs.
ReplyDeleteWell I just found out Tyvek is house wrap wow. I will see if I can find some without having to get it off of ebay.
